Birdwatch: Crowd Wisdom and Bridging Algorithms can Inform Understanding and Reduce the Spread of Misinformation

Research examining how crowdsourced annotations combined with algorithmic selection can combat misinformation, developing a matrix-factorization algorithm identifying annotations that appeal broadly across heterogeneous user groups through bridging-based ranking. Results showed algorithmically-selected annotations outperformed baselines, and Twitter users exposed to them were significantly less likely to reshare posts. Demonstrates that combining collective intelligence with thoughtful algorithmic curation effectively reduces misinformation spread.
